en Fender – Jensen speaker phase were reversed in 50’s tweed amps

I just tried 9V battery trick for 50’s Fender Champ 5F1 and Deluxe 5D3. and the speaker wiring turned out being reversed. both of them still have the factory wiring.

And, both of them move backward (to the magnets) when they wired 9V + to the white wire, and – pole to the black wire.

They mostly say there is no absolute speaker phase unless they are in the same cabinet. at the same time, many people say the speaker cones move forward when they hooked up in the right direction with 9V battery.

Fortunately, 9V battery didn’t kill my 8″ Champ speaker, nor 12″ Deluxe speaker. but I’ve read some cases this trick killed their speakers.

I’m not sure with 50’s and 60’s Jensen speaker’s correct phase. but, I started to believe Fender hooked them up this way. I’ve seen only 2 cases. and will update if I come across any Jensen speaker with different phase.

  • en interesting amps and cabinet from John Mergili

  • recently got me a 5F1 champ cabinet for 10″ speaker from this guy. the quality is great indeed. I’ll update with some pics after I finish the amp inside of the tweed cabinet. a friend is playing his tweed champ with 12″ speaker more than the stock 8″. I’m going to start with WGS 10″ ceramic speaker which came with the cabinet.

  • en Astron minimite dry electrolytic capacitors

  •

it’s my tweed deluxe 5d3 with Astron cap paper sleeves with Sprague caps inside. TE-1207 for 25uf 25V. and, 16uf 475V for 16uf 450V. I’m still after one more Astron 16uf 450V cap or sleeve. but even dead astron caps are not cheap on ebay. I tried it but the ending price went way further than I expected.

this 5d3 is getting closer to the original shape with the restuff filter caps. the correct switchcraft 1/4 phone plug and 18awg Gaviitt cloth wire are coming to me as well.

  • en Sprague caps from a movie – on Apple-1 motherboard

  • They tweaked the large sprague caps and the small ones too much for the scene. but it’s still good to see my favorite sprague capacitors on a movie. aren’t they orange back in the days?

this board is Apple-1 from this movie Jobs from 2013

btw, I wanted to capture the scenes. and it didn’t work with Safari browser. this helped me out. you can capture the screenshot while it’s playing on chrome. it didn’t work while posed.

  • en Is cloud gaming the future of online video games?

  • French start-up Blade thinks it has what it takes to succeed in the space. Its cloud gaming service, Shadow, aims to bring the experience of playing a powerful gaming PC to any device, be it a laptop, tablet, phone, or smart TV. Blade’s goal for “Shadow” is substantially more ambitious than any of its peers. Rather than creating a service that delivers content, it wants to replace your console or gaming PC entirely. Booting up Shadow serves you a virtual Windows machine, which you can use to play your games on Steam, Origin, Humble, and Itch.io. The games purchased by yours, and yours to keep, from the standard storefronts. Your Shadow machine is just like any computer you’d own, except you can access it on any device for which Blade has created a client, including Macs, PCs, iOS, and Android devices. Shadow also works directly on Sony smart TVs through an Android client, and a client for Tizen-based Samsung smart TVs is on the way.

The goal of all this is bold, yet simple. Blade wants to make the home PC obsolete. You can find more informations on their website:

  • en a friend’s beautiful Les Paul

  • all the black plastic parts have changed with vintage correct white ones. this Joe Bonamassa burst #70 has beautiful top and dark back with ’59 profile neck and Burstbucker #2 and #3. the orignal 50’s burst Les Paul guitars mostly had 7.5k to 8.4k pickups and many of them had hotter ones on the neck position.

Gibon’s burstbucker was made after the original PAF pickups which had unbalanced bobbins. I’d put #3 on the neck and #2 on the bridge. personally the best PAF replica was Timbucker from Tim white I got at 2003 with my Brazilian freboard 59 historic. and, at the time a few friends on Lespaulforum.com tried Seymour Duncan Custmop Shop PAF replicas and it was a great pleasure to listen them.

The same Duncan Custom shop PAF pickups are coming for this Les paul. and I believe he’d love them over burstbucker pickups

more vintage correct parts like truss rod cover and square jack plate are coming as well.

  • en I’m into 5v4g than 5y3 with 6v6 tweed amps

  • [EDIT]

I’m updating this post not to make people confused. I believed B+ was lower with 5v4g than 5y3. but 5v4g is increasing B+ and makes the bias warmer than 5y3. I guess it is the reason I feel the amps are more alive with 5v4g

then I noticed the vintage amps with the original caps from 50’s and early 60’s are more vulnerable with 5v4g to 60hz hum. I’m just guessing leakage of the coupling caps and the filter caps could be the reason. I’m still enjoying 5v4g with the amps with new components. didn’t have an issue with my 5D3 which has new filter caps either.

    [EDIT again]
one of my 5V4G tubes shows very low B+. the 60hz hum came from it I believe

there are more and better info for 5vg and 5y3 rectifiers on the gearpage.net

I hook up tweed champ, deluxe, and m-track 2×2 together while jamming with youtube. 5v4g sounds still alive with this stereo and digital setup to me. but, m-track 2×2 is cheap and sharing the one single full bandwidth with usb and instrument at the same time. it sounds good while using only one of them. it sucks when the knob is at the center.

it’s the knob on m-track 2×2. don’t buy it if you want to use your guitar amps as monitor speakers while playing guitar through the direct input. maybe I’m just doing this wrong.
