it’s a ’59 fender tweed champ with 8″ stock jensen speaker. I’ve learned more than a few things from this amp. mostly about the tone. and it forces me to play more than before I got this small tweed amp. 

I’m using 5y3 rectifier for the original setup along with 5v4g for more clean headroom. and  watching that huge rectifier from the back side. 5v4g and Bendix 5y3 look beautiful at night.

5F1 breaks up early and it’s the character of this amp. 5v4g makes 5F1 sounds a bit like tweed deluxe. but, it’s still tweed champ of course. and, I recently noticed 5f1 with 5v4g is more vulnerable to 60hz hum. so, I came back to the stock 5y3

어려서는 콘덴서라고 했습니다. 지금은 캐퍼시터라고 하는데 전해콘덴서는 또 그렇게 부르게 됩니다.

펜더 트위드 앰프에는 큼지막한 아스트론 전해콘덴서와 빨강, 노랑 캐퍼시터가 들어 있었습니다. 그 전에는 아스트론 왁스 캐퍼시터가 들어 있었구요.

앰프를 고치다보니 캐퍼시터를 찾기 시작했습니다. 5,60년대에 캐퍼시터를 만들던 회사들이 이제는 Vishay나 필립스 같은 큰 회사의 일부였습니다. 이제는 스프라그나 Cornell Dubilier나 어디 물건을 써도, 미국산이던 대만산이던 모양 차이만 있지 않을까 싶기도 합니다. 써보니 그렇기도 하구요.

그래도 스프라그는 그 큼직한 부피를 버리지 않으니 쓰는 입장에서 좋습니다.

60년대 저 큼직한 페이퍼캡을 Cornell Dubilier 세개, 스프라그 하나 구했습니다.

스프라그는 요즘 캐퍼시터 넣은 것하고 차이를 못느꼈습니다. 코넬은 하나는 잡음이 심해서 바로 뺐습니다. 또 다른 코넬 하나는 그것 때문인지 뭔지 모르는 잡음이 몇주 있다가 사라졌습니다.

커다란 캡 옆에 있는 같은 25uf 25v 캡에는 실제로 12~14v 걸리던데, 크게 상관은 없지만 바꾸니 앰프가 훨씬 조용해졌습니다. 이제는 쟤까지 바꾸는걸로 생각하고 구형 스프라그를 그 숫자만큼 구해뒀습니다. 가격은 요즘 신형하고 같거나 더 싼데, 구형 재고가 있더라구요.

맨 오른쪽에 있는 25uf 25v 캡은 전압이 1.5V 미만으로 걸립니다. 그래서 종종 아주 오래 살아남습니다. 전압을 재보면 왼쪽에서 오른쪽으로 갈수록 낮게 걸리고, 그만큼 수명에 영향이 적더라구요.

전원을 넣으면 저 사진에는 없고 트랜스포머 옆에 있는 큼직한 16uf 450v에 440v가 걸리면서 옆에 두개가 채워집니다. 그리고 나면 320v에서 340v가 늘 걸려있습니다. 신호가 흐르면 빠져나가고 채워지고 합니다. 이게 용량, 스피드 다 계산해서 표시를 할텐데 그럼 요즘 물건들은 트랜지스터처럼 주파수가 빠른 것들도 있을까 궁금해집니다.

가끔 궁금합니다. 아스트론은 이제 회사를 찾을 수 없던데 어떻게 되었는지.

it’s my tweed deluxe 5d3 with Astron cap paper sleeves with Sprague caps inside. TE-1207 for 25uf 25V. and, 16uf 475V for 16uf 450V. I’m still after one more Astron 16uf 450V cap or sleeve. but even dead astron caps are not cheap on ebay. I tried it but the ending price went way further than I expected.

this 5d3 is getting closer to the original shape with the restuff filter caps. the correct switchcraft 1/4 phone plug and 18awg Gaviitt cloth wire are coming to me as well.

5y3 rectifier tube in my 5F1 tweed champ went dead a month ago. and everything was fine after I put a new 5y3 tube.

then, the same thing happened today. I figured out this 16uf 450V Astron minimite filter cap was the problem.

Sprague 16uf 475v fits Astron Minimite 16uf 450V paper sleeve. my champ sounds firm and clear than ever with this new cap.

You need to strip off the blue shrink cover to put it in the paper sleeve as you can see

Sadly, I’ve lost 2 of these 5y3 tubes from this issue. but still good with the better sounding from this small tweed amp.
